WEEK 11 - Lesson Plans for 3/18 - 3/21
Chemistry I - As we continue looking at the difference
between polar covalent, non-polar covalent, and ionic compounds both
quantitatively and qualitatively, students will continue naming and writing
formulas of each. Lewis structures are introduced, implementing our
past knowledge of electron dot notation. This gives students a
visual model of why things bond covalently or ionically too. The Penny Lab has students dropping water
droplets on to a penny to look at the properties of water due to hydrogen
bonding. This gets pretty competitive and exciting!
Monday:
1. quiz back over electronegativity and naming and writing
formulae
2. Penny Lab due
3. Lewis Structure notes
4. Work on Lewis I
worksheet together in class
Tuesday:
1. Ionic Bonding Labs back
2. Penny Lab - grade
3. continue Lewis Structures notes
4. finish Lewis I
Weds:
1. continue notes into geometry
2. finish Lewis I and turn

4. Lewis III due Monday
Thursday:
1. Lewis II due tomorrow
2. notes on geometry and hybridization
3.
Naming Acids Pop Quiz
Friday:
1. grade Lewis II
2. Lewis III due Monday – add hybridization
and geometry
3. quiz Monday on Lewis
3. finish
notes
Adv. Chemistry - After ending the acid-base unit, we
dive into Thermochemistry and review specific heat, adding the concept of
enthalpy, heats of formation, and heats of combustion.
Monday:
1. start thermochemistry notes thru heat capacity
2. Mpemba article due Friday
Tuesday:
1. continue thermochemistry notes on phase changes
2. specific heat worksheet due Thursday
3. give out new ion list based on solubility rules
Weds:

Thursday:
1. Thermodynamics Lab tomorrow
2. HOF/HOV problems due Monday
3. continue notes over heats of formation and Hess' Law
Friday: Thermodynamics Lab
AP Chemistry - This week will focus on practice free responses for
the thermochemistry review unit as well as continuing on with the
electrochemistry of the galvanic cell. The Nernst equation is added,
bringing back our old friend "Q" from the equilibrium
unit. Mr. Smith's manufacturing class will be visiting us early next
week to create polymers with Chemistry Club and then we will visit their lab
next week to see some of the neat things they make and the equipment they use
in Manufacturing. We will practice our labs for that visit
Monday:
1. rings and things quiz 3 back
2. grade review I with model kit extension
3. reviews 1,2, and 3 due tomorrow
4. hydrocarbon review due Weds
5. test on Thursday and Friday
6. Finish halocarbon discussion
7. Halocarbon worksheet due Thursday
Tuesday:
1. grade reviews 1,2, and 3
2. chapter review due tomorrow
3. notes on identifying the 10 types of organics
