Week 2 Lesson Plans August 24th -28th
Chemistry I – Last week we
were in the lab to cut, fire polish, and bend glass tubing. This
allows me to identify the pyromaniacs and deviants so I am aware of their
presence in the lab. It is fine to be fascinated by fire, but we
need to be safe. I certainly love fire myself. We will
review lab equipment to help with the Unit I assessment. Students are getting to know their books
through a series of book worksheets developed to encourage the reading of the
text. A new lab – The Physical and
Chemical Properties Lab – introduces the students to Unit II and the format of
writing lab reports.
1. Lab Safety Post-tests
2. Pick up Physical and
Chemical Properties Lab and lab report sheet
3. GTK your Book due –
questions?
4. Unit I Test with Lab
equipment Wednesday
5. Element review due Friday
6. How to write a Lab
Report introduced
7. light hands on fire?
8. Begin Lab Day I

steps
b. explain the steps of the scientific method
c. describe the importance of controlled experiments
d. perform experiment
5. Application of the scientific method to real life
Common Core Standards:
RST.9-10.4. Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and
other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific
scientific or technical context relevant to grades 9–10 texts and topics.
RST.9-10.5. Analyze the structure of the relationships among
concepts in a text, including relationships among key terms (e.g., force,
friction, reaction force, energy).
Assessments:
Lab report pre-lab
Physical and Chemical Properties Lab
Lab Safety Test
Getting to know Chapter 1 assignment - types of chemistry and
scientific method
Identification and use of lab equipment
Advanced Chemistry - Writing,
balancing, and identifying reactions are reviewed through a series of
demonstrations and labs. The short week
is spent in the potassium Iodide lab and also getting help on the balancing
review that is attached to the whoosh bottle demo.
Tuesday:
- Continue notes on identifying types of
reactions.
- Potassium Iodide Lab
- Balancing Review back and discussed
- Whoosh Bottle demo and balancing worksheet

5. Application of the scientific method to real life and
observing a decomposition reaction – electrolysis of potassium iodide
Common Core Standards: 4a) Design and carry out
an experiment- Chemistry is a lab oriented course. Students collect
and analyze data and then report their conclusions.
