Chemistry I – The objective this week is to finish up our unit on physical and chemical properties and changes and the review of the elements for a Unit 2 test.  Lab reports are discussed.  Lab data will be covered on the test.  Please study the elements!

Adv. Chemistry – This week will continue our exploration into stoichiometry.  Students will evaluate their data so far for the reaction stoichiometry lab.  The third trial is done to evaluate precision and accuracy.  Limiting reactants will be explored further.  We will also revisit the concept of molarity or concentration and have a molarity lab where students prepare certain concentrations of various chemical solutions.  Multiple short quizzes will assess these concepts.

Chemistry II:  This week we will continue our discussion of limiting and excess reactants using stoichiometry problems and labs.  These are big ideas in the study of chemistry and are used throughout the year.  The sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate ratio stoichiometry lab where the limiting and excess reactants are found as well as ratios.

AP Chemistry:  This week we will continue our exploration of alkenes, alkynes, and isomers.  T-shirts will start development and students will create the J-hook glass apparatus for the underwater Fireworks Lab where we make and ignite acetylene (ethyne) under the fume hood.

Chemistry I – This week we will be getting into the lab to cut, fire polish, and bend glass tubing.  This allows me to identify the pyromaniacs and deviants so I am aware of their presence in the lab.  It is fine to be fascinated by fire – I just want to be aware.  I certainly love fire myself.  We will also be reviewing unit I to prepare for the test over types of Chemistry and the scientific method.  Students will learn and identify lab equipment for the test as well.  Students are getting to know their books through a series of book worksheets developed to encourage the reading of the text.

Chemistry II - This week will focus on applying our review of balancing and calculating formula mass, percent composition, and empirical and molecular formulae using a lab on finding the percent composition of potassium chlorate.  Use of lab techniques and individual design of methods to improve accuracy and precision will be discussed after the lab is completed.  A formal lab report will be written.

Chapter 1 – Atomic Structure
Discuss the history of chemistry and the foundational laws (i.e. law of conservation of mass, law of definite proportions)
Explain the discovery of the atom historically
Communicate the different atomic theories
Interpret the periodic table in terms of protons, neutrons, electrons, and molar mass
Describe the dual nature of electrons
Calculate the energy of an electron transition

Chemistry I - - These half-days are centered on the student.  The ones I know and the especially the new ones.  I would like to know their expectations of the course and get to know the new ones better through a questionnaire.  We will also begin going through the obligatory paperwork concerning rules and behavior so that the student understands my expectations.  I prefer to work with my students and their parents as a team for a successful year. These are early dismissal days 11:30.
