Lesson Plans 10/30-11/3

Week 12 - Chemistry I Lesson Plans 10/30-11/3
Students will focus on specific heat in the completion of our measurement unit.  Dimensional analysis problems and sig fig use are still in effect.  A Specific Heat Lab will use a different type of calorimeter than that of the Energy of Foods Lab.  Students will identity an unknown metal during the Specific Heat Lab and revisit accuracy and precision in the lab to try to minimize error.

Students will apply significant figures rules in rounding to dimensional analysis problems throughout the week.  Several small quizzes will be used to assess student knowledge of conversion factors and sig fig use.  Students will prepare for the density column activity to better understand the relationship between mass and volume and how they affect density.

Students will continue exploring different gas law through labs and practice problems.  Cartesian divers are made to demonstrate Boyle's Law.  The Crush the Can and Rising Water Mystery labs explain Charles' Law and Gay-Lussac's Law.  Several mini-labs reinforce these laws as well.  Homework and short quizzes are given to assess student knowledge as well as lab write-ups and formal reports.

Week 9:  Chemistry I Lesson Plans October 10-13
This week we will continue our measurement unit,  focusing on heats of combustion with the glucose and fatty acid molecules designed and tested in the WebMO Computational Lab.  Students will test the chip for amount of energy produced when burned and evaluate the data collected by each class.  We will also delve deeper into our discussion of dimensional analysis, scientific notation, calculating with exponents, and using significant digits.

Tuesday:  burn the chip!

This week we will continue our discussion with various gas laws in the Gas Laws Unit.  A short quiz will act as an assessment for each law.  Students will perform the Cartesian Diver Lab and design a cartesian diver of their own to demonstrate and explain Boyle's Law.  Smarty Pants awards will be given to the class with the best Marshmallow Man to put in the vacuum chamber - another way to show Boyle's Law!
