Chemistry I - This week will wrap up chapter 3 and the atom, leading in to chapter 4 which focuses on the electron and energy.  Converting atoms to mols to mass will revisit dimensional analysis and apply that knowledge to how scientists find average isotopic mass on the periodic table.  Several assessments will be given to check on understanding of the concept of the mol, hyphen and nuclear symbol notation, and conversion factors.

Adv. Chemistry - We will continue our Gas Law Unit, covering the Combined and Ideal Gas Laws.  The Crush the Can and Rising Water Mystery Labs look at Charles’ and Gay-Lussac’s Laws.  Assessments over each law and practice problems also continue.

Week 14 Lesson Plans for November 16th – 20th

Chemistry I - Assessment for the Measurement Unit will be a two part test combining dimensional analysis with significant figures, metric system, specific heat, scientific notation, and rounding rules - with everything in between!  The atom is explored in chapter 3.  Students were asked to draw an iron atom, labeling where the protons, electrons, neutrons, and nucleus are located as well as a way to key them out in the drawing.  This activity inspires the students to learn more about these subatomic particles and shows them that it has been a while since they last visited the atom.  The concept of the mol (an amount of substance) will be introduced in the mol lab.  Students will learn about the history of the atom.

Adv. Chemistry  - This week we will continue our discussion with various gas laws in the Gas Laws Unit.  A short quiz will act as an assessment for each law.  Students will perform the Cartesian Diver Lab and design a cartesian diver of their own to demonstrate and explain Boyle's Law.  Best diver wins a smarty pants!  Smarty Pants awards will be given to the class with the best Marshmallow Man to put in the vacuum chamber - another way to show Boyle's Law!

Chemistry I - Students will focus on specific heat in the completion of our measurement unit.  Dimensional analysis problems and sig fig use are still in effect.  We will finish up our Specific Heat Lab which uses a different type of calorimeter than that of the Energy of Foods Lab – a sophisticated Styrofoam calorimeter cup instead of a pop can.  Students will identity an unknown metal during the Specific Heat Lab and revisit accuracy and precision in the lab to try to minimize error.  The atom Is next and will be explored in chapter 3.  Students are asked to draw a Manganese atom, labeling where the protons, electrons, neutrons, and nucleus are located as well as a way to key them out in the drawing.  This activity inspires the students to learn more about these subatomic particles and shows them that it has been a while since they last visited the atom.
