Chemistry I - As we continue naming and writing formulae for ionic and covalent compounds, we will have labs reflecting both.  Ionic compounds will be made and examined in the Ionic Bond Lab and the covalent compound, water, will be tested to examine the special properties of this polar molecule.  WebMO, a computational chemistry tool, will help show the difference between polar and non-polar molecules as well.

Chemistry  - We will be finishing up our discussion on acids and bases, specifically how to find the pH of a weak base using the Ka, acid dissociation constant, and ICE tables.  We will review the unit in its entirety for the acid-base exam and also introduce buffer systems to better understand the link between our well-being and our blood pH.  No ion quiz this week

Chemistry I - Students will continue to learn the different types of bonding and how to predict which type will occur.  We will explore intermolecular and intramolecular forces that hold molecules together.  Practicing naming and writing formulae is a very important skill and we will continue this throughout the year.

Chemistry I - Students will finish their ch 4 assessments and prepare for their chapter 5 upcoming quest.  These units lead in to chapter 6 where students learn the different types of bonding and how to predict which type will occur.  We will explore ionic and covalent bonding through demos and videos and then work on hooking up ions to make and name ionic compounds.

Chemistry - Naming acids and bases will be reviewed and the concept of titration to find an unknown molarity is introduced.  Ions need to be memorized in order to be able to name the acids.  Different types of acid definitions are given in order to understand how acids play a role in living systems.  The acid-base lab explores reactions of both.
