Chemistry I Lesson Plans - The idea of assigning quantum numbers for every individual electron in an atom is explored further as students focus on the outer shell electrons and the orbit, orbital, and spin each one has.  The Laser Lab uses nanotechnology to find the spacing between tracks on a CD.  Classes and students judge their individual and group accuracy and precision in order to evaluate and improve measuring and lab skills.  The Periodic Table is further explored as trends in each main group are studied.

Adv. Chemistry Lesson Plans - Naming acids and bases will be reviewed and the concept of titration to find an unknown molarity is introduced.  Ions need to be memorized in order to be able to name the acids.  Different types of acid definitions are given in order to understand how acids play a role in living systems.  The acid-base lab explores reactions of both.

AP Chemistry Lesson Plans - this week concludes the equilibrium and kinetics units we have been studying first semester.  These topics will be seen again during our reviews of acid-base chemistry and thermodynamics.  Chapter 8 review discusses phase diagrams and how to read them.  These diagrams are standard on the AP test and most Chemistry tests.  We will being our study of electrochemistry by revisiting ion charges and learning about oxidation numbers - how an atom's charge can change based on what atom it is bonded with

Chemistry I Lesson Plans - We will continue to look at notations for quantum numbers to give the location of electrons in the electron cloud.  These positions determine the reactivity of an atom and predictions can be made about properties of an element based on the outer shell electrons.  Lasers will be used to determine the distance between tracks on a CD.  Nanotechnology is introduced in this way.  Orbital notation and electron dot notation are added to our notes.  In-class practice of these notations takes place this week while some groups work on the laser labs.

Adv. Chemistry:

Our new unit to start the new year is acid-base.  Many students know what things are acidic like pop or vinegar, but few recognize alkaline or basic chemicals like ammonia or baking soda.  We will being our unit learning about pH and how we can test a substance's pH.  Students will make predictions about common household items and then run tests to see if those predictions are correct.  This will be the cue set for the unit.

Lesson Plans ADV. CHEMISTRY December 11th – 15th

The difference between a fission and fusion reactor is further investigated.  Students will run a nuclear simulator designed to test them on control of a fission reactor.  They must keep an average of 1500 kW for their city without brown-outs, black-outs, or a nuclear meltdown.  We will grade the Nuclear Chemistry Review in preparation for our test Thursday.

The kinetics unit will continue as we work example kinetics problems through lecture and problems to distinguish between zero thru third order reaction rates problems.  Labs will emphasize the value of a controlled experiment, especially when time is the variable in question.  AP Review Chapter over Kinetics will be due after break.  A holiday ornament lab will use the principles of kinetics and also introduce electrochemistry - our next topic - as we make a silver/glass plated  ornament for the holidays.

This week will finish exploring chapter 3 - the atom.  Converting atoms to mols to mass will revisit dimensional analysis and apply that knowledge to how scientists average isotopic mass on the periodic table.  Several assessments will be given to check on understanding of the concept of the mol, hyphen and nuclear symbol notation, and conversion factors.  We will delve into chapter 4 - light and energy - with an introduction into spectrum tubes and signature light colors of the elements.  The Flame Test lab will show this using fire where the spectrum tubes excite electrons using electricity.
