WEEK FIVE: 1/29 – 2/2 Lesson Plans

WEEK FIVE: 1/29 – 2/2 Lesson Plans

Chemistry I - This week will focus on using notations to predict the reactivity and properties of an element based on the atom's electron configuration.  We will use quantum number theory to assign a position to the last electron in a particular element's orbit.  Students will analyze and apply a prison building as a model for the atomic quantum number theory instead of the hotel analogy used in the beginning of the unit.  We will also look back at our atomic diagrams that students did before the unit to see how much we have learned.

Monday:
1.  grade quantum numbers
2.  POMS quiz tomorrow
3.  chapter 4 review due Weds
4.  chapter 4 test Thursday
5.  laser lab back
6.  ch 5 notes

Tuesday:
1.      POMS quiz
2.      analogy and artist time due
3.      chapter 4 review sheet
4.    notes on Chapter 5

Wednesday:
1.  Chapter 4 test tomorrow
2.  work on Periodic Properties worksheet due Friday

Thurs:
1.  Chapter 4 test
2.  Periodic Properties worksheet I due Friday
3.  Periodic Properties worksheet II due Monday

Friday:
1.  finish test
2.  Periodic Properties worksheet due
3.  Periodic Properties II worksheet due Monday
4.  alkali metals pre-lab

Adv. Chemistry - Continuing our journey into acids and bases, we will review naming rules and introduce the concept of titration to find out how strong and concentrated an unknown acid or base may be using experimental data.  This will be done first using a virtual lab program on the computer, then we will try it in the wet lab.  The virtual experience limits chemical waste and mistakes during the wet lab, showing students what to expect and introducing them to the equipment.  Weekly ion quizzes will start to prepare students for naming acids and bases as well as learning the upcoming solubility unit rules.

Monday:
1.  grade ions and acids worksheet
2.  quiz over strong acids and strong bases tomorrow
3.  notes thru titration

Tuesday:
1.  strong acids /strong bases quiz
2.  grade naming acids
3.  continue notes into titration
4.  ion quiz tomorrow

Wednesday:
1.  baby ion quiz II
2.  grade naming acids and naming bases reviews
3.  continue notes on titration

Thursday:
1.  finish notes on titration
2.  start virtual titration lab - due Friday

Friday:  finish virtual lab

AP Chemistry - This week will wrap up our ch 8 AP book review assignment on phases, focusing on phase diagrams which can give a lot of information on the properties and behavior of an element or compound.  We will also begin our electrochemistry unit by assigning oxidation numbers to atoms and looking at how they change in a reaction.  This is the basis for electron exchange which contributes to the idea of the voltaic cell (battery).  If also determines whether or not a reaction will be spontaneous or not.

Monday:
1.  phase diagrams due
2.  grade phase diagram 4
3.  quiz tomorrow over phase diagram
4.  oxidation numbers discussion with rules - finish
5.  problem set I due tomorrow

Tuesday:
1.  phase diagram quiz
2.  go over problem set I
3.  redox notes and examples
4.  oxidation review due Thursday
5.  quiz over it Friday

Wednesday:
1.  ch 8 review due
2.  oxidation review due tomorrow
3.  redox notes and problems

Thursday:
1.  grade oxidation review
2.  redox examples

Friday:
1.  oxidation number quiz

2.  pick up new set - due Monday
